Technology Tours
The first day of the Atlantic Biorefinery Conference, Monday May 30th, will be a full day of visits to local facilities that are doing work in biorefining and bioprocessing. Transporation and meals will be provided. The tours will be separated into 2 tour groups. Meet the tour buses at the Westin Nova Scotian Hotel (1181 Hollis St.) at 8:30 a.m.

Perennia helps farmers, fishermen, and food processors be prosperous and profitable. They work with clients to address production issues, create food safety programs, offer leased incubation space for new product development, and help them conduct research to transform under-utilized land into high-value products.
Maritime BioExtracts, Inc. is a Nova Scotian process technology company specializing in the development and production of: bioactive natural health, functional foods and nutraceutical products. The bioextraction facility at the Perennia Innovation Centre incorporates the capacity for R&D, piloting and the toll manufacturing of these products. Hefler Quality Lumber
230 Lucasville Road, Middle Sackville, NS
TOUR STARTS 2:10 P.M.
In 2014 Hefler started rebuilding a Middle Sackville saw mill, preserving 50 plus local jobs. Construction also started on a new Biomass Energy Plant, which was completed in June 2015. Hefler continues to manufacture premium quality lumber with upgraded equipment which also enables them to produce enough biomass to fuel the power plant.
The new energy plant can produce enough energy to power thousands of homes and the waste energy is used to replace over 240,000 litres of fossil fuels annually that currently heat the kiln. Every ton of logs delivered to our facility is converted to lumber, energy and ash (mineral), which is used in agriculture. Learn more about Hefler.

Ketch Harbour Marine Research Station

The National Research Council of Canada (NRC) has been growing algae in Ketch Harbour, Nova Scotia for nearly 50 years. In the last five years, their comprehensive seaweed cultivation facility has been outfitted with additional equipment for the production of substantial quantities of microalgae. These unique facilities, coupled with experts in algal biology and analytical chemistry, enable them to deliver specialized research solutions for collaborators and clients. Through the Algal Carbon Conversion Flagship Program, the Marine Research Station is developing strategies to divert industrial CO2 emissions into algal biomass and to convert that biomass into high-value products. Innovacorp Demonstration Center and Cellufuel

Innovacorp Demonstration Centre is located on an 88-acre commercial park in Brooklyn, Nova Scotia. New companies can test their technologies before bringing them to full market scale in a location with access to a port, large warehouse space, high-value equipment, and more.
The conference visit will include a tour of the entire property, a look inside the incredible retired Bowater Mersey Paper Company pulp mill, and a visit to current Innovacorp tenants including Cellufuel who are making synthetic diesel from woody biomass.
