 BioAmber Inc. has announced that commissioning has begun at its $125-million bio-succinic acid plant in Sarnia, Ontario. Plans to construct the 30,000 ton capacity plant were announced in 2011 and the facility is expected to be at full commercial capacity by Fall 2015.
The five-stage commissioning process has already begun, with full construction of the plant expected before June 2015. BioAmber has already hired and trained all of its 60 staff that includes plant operators, engineers, maintenance staff, and supply chain workers. The large project is expected to stay on schedule within the original budget estimate. The plant will use high fructose corn syrup to produce bio-succinic acid, a chemical used in the making of cosmetics, plastics, and other materials. BioAmber has been making bio-succinic acid at a facility in France using technology from the 1990s.
