Cascades Inc., a leader in the recovery of recyclable materials and manufacturing green packaging products and tissue paper, is pleased to announce the company's investment in a new technology at its Norampac—Cabano facility. This innovative new process—a Canadian first—is used to extract hemicellulose, a cellulosic sugar with high value-added potential, from wood chips. This project—worth a total of $26 million—represents a major advance in biorefinery development in Canada. Backed by a $10 million investment from Natural Resources Canada's Investments in Forest Industry Transformation program and an additional $4.4 million from the Québec Ministère des Forêts, de la Faune et des Parcs, the Cabano plant will replace its current process—the production of sodium carbonate-based chemical pulp—with this new, more environmentally friendly and economical one that was developed in conjunction with a U.S. partner. This new process—the extraction of hemicellulose from deciduous woodchips—will replace the use of chemical products, which would otherwise have to be purchased, shipped and disposed of responsibly. Another benefit is the plant's reduced energy consumption, which will boost Cabano's competitiveness. The facility's reduced environmental footprint will position Cabano to offer products that are even more environmentally friendly. Click here to read more. Sustane Technologies Inc. will build a $13M commercial demonstration plant at the Municipality of the District of Chester’s landfill. Slated to be open in 2016, the plant will divert 90% of the waste from the landfill and convert it into biomass pellets and recyclable materials. Sustane’s technologies separate mixed municipal waste into very high purity components including plastics, metals, glass and biomass. The project is being funded by private investment and a repayable contribution from ACOA, which was announced on April 7, 2015. Congratulations to Jon MacCurdy of Point La Nim on a successful Kickstarter campaign! The project surpassed its $7,500 goal in less than 60 days, buoyed by word-of mouth, social media buzz and coverage from CBC New Brunswick. The funds are slated for a new evaporator that will allow the farm to scale up production of its Birch, Please! syrup products this spring.
MacCurdy started tapping birch trees on his property in 2014. He was able to produce and sell several cases of birch syrup and is planning to tap more trees this season. Birch syrup is renowned by foodies for its unique and complex flavour profile; however, its production is more labour-intensive than maple syrup, requiring twice the volume of sap to make the same amount of finished product.
