Congratulations to Jon MacCurdy of Point La Nim on a successful Kickstarter campaign! The project surpassed its $7,500 goal in less than 60 days, buoyed by word-of mouth, social media buzz and coverage from CBC New Brunswick. The funds are slated for a new evaporator that will allow the farm to scale up production of its Birch, Please! syrup products this spring.
MacCurdy started tapping birch trees on his property in 2014. He was able to produce and sell several cases of birch syrup and is planning to tap more trees this season. Birch syrup is renowned by foodies for its unique and complex flavour profile; however, its production is more labour-intensive than maple syrup, requiring twice the volume of sap to make the same amount of finished product.
